Processes & Evidence for Evolution 15. Describe descent with modification: This is the idea that species change over time, give rise to new species, and share a common ancestor. Basically, children look a little different from their parents, and over thousands of years, those small changes add up to big differences. 16. Reproductive Isolation: Formerly breeding species can no longer mate. 17. Divergence: Species acquire different traits (or differences). 18. Speciation: Formation of new species. 19. Subspecies: Members of the same species that differ genetically because of different environments. 20. What is a common ancestor? An older species from which two or more newer species evolved. (Think of it like a great-great-great grandparent for an entire species). 21. Homology: Features that are similar because they were inherited from a common ancestor (like a human arm and a bat wing). 22. Analogy: Features that look similar or do the same job but are NOT from a common ancestor (like a bird wing and a butterfly wing). 23. What is a homologous structure? A physical body part shared by different species that has a similar bone structure but might do a different job. How these provide ...
