Sper + ovu
What is meiosis?
Notes
•Sper + ovum (egg) Zugate must have 46 chromosomes to be considered normal cells. The nucleus has 73x, and Kaid has 22. The last set (XY) determines sex. •Meiosis Meiosis is the process by which gametes (sex cells) with half the number of chromosomes are produced. During meiosis, diploid cells reduce to haploid cells. Diploid (2n) → Haploid (n) If meiosis did not occur, the chromosome number in each new generation would double, leading to genetic imbalance. •Meiosis Process Meiosis is a type of cell division called meiosis I and meiosis II, involving only one duplication of chromosomes. In males, meiosis is called spermatogenesis and produces sperm. In females, it is called oogenesis and produces ova. •Spermatogenesis and Oogenesis Spermatogenesis begins with one primary spermatocyte and ends with four sperm cells. Oogenesis begins with one primary oocyte and results in one ovum. The secondary spermatocyte has 23 chromosomes, and the secondary oocyte also has 23 chromosomes.
