Foundations of Operations Management In the study of Business Management, operations management (OM) is frequently described as the "engine room" of the organization. It is the functional area fundamentally responsible for the creation of value through the provision of goods and services. For an organization to remain viable, operations must ensure that these products are delivered in the right quantity and at the right quality, while simultaneously being cost-effective and timely. The core role of production is a transformative one: it converts factors of production (inputs) into final goods or services (outputs) specifically by adding value. The Input-Production-Output Model The transformation process follows a logical sequence that every IB student must be able to visualize: ● Inputs: The resources utilized in the process, known as the factors of production (e.g., raw materials, labor, and land). ● Production: The middle phase where the actual transformation occurs and value is added to the initial resources. ● Outputs: The final goods and services ready for distribution to the consumer.
