INTRODUCTION TO CONTRASTIVE LINGUISTICS 1. DEFINITION, SCOPE, AND SUBDISCIPLINES Speakers intuitively compare the languages they use. They find differences and similarities. They establish relative difficulty and problems caused by the similarities/differences between the languages. They even tend to explain the differences. Although sometimes conscious, such contrastive efforts are intuitive and non- systematic. Contrastive Linguistics is the systematic comparison of 2 or more languages, in order to describe their similarities and differences. CLx comprises 3 subdisciplines: • Contrastive analysis (CA): systematic comparison between the elements of those languages. • Theory of translation (TT): the search for equivalence between two texts. • Error analysis (EA): identification and explanation o...
