â˘Immobility An inability to reposition or move oneself. Mobility refers to motion or movement. Moving without restrictions is essential for health. â˘Bone remodeling The process of bone breakdown and replacement that occurs throughout a lifespan. â˘Disuse osteoporosis Loss of skeletal mass, density, and strength caused by immobility. â˘Fragility fractures Fractures that occur following stress on a bone that would not typically cause a break. â˘Sarcopenia Loss of lean muscle caused by immobility. â˘Joint contractures Abnormal fixation of a joint due to changes in muscles and connective tissue. â˘Foot drop A type of joint contracture resulting in the foot and toes permanently pointing downward. â˘Cardiac de-conditioning Atrophy of the heart muscle, leading to decreased blood ejection during contraction. â˘Orthostatic hypotension A decrease in blood pressure upon standing, especially from lying or sitting.
