Engineering Mechanics: STATICS Engr. Ronald P. Bual Assoc. Prof. General Principles WHAT IS MECHANICS? ❑ Mechanics, at its most basic level, is the study of forces and their effects on the motion of bodies. ❑ Study of what happens to a “thing”(the technical name is “body”) when FORCES are applied to it. ❑ Mechanics has three branches: the mechanics of rigid bodies, the mechanics of deformable bodies, and the mechanics of fluids. 2 Branches of Mechanics Mechanics Rigid Bodies Statics (ES 61) Dynamics (ES 62) Deformable Bodies (ES 64) Fluids (ES 65) 3 Rigid Body Mechanics… Statics deals with the equilibrium of bodies, that is, those that are either at rest or move with a uniform velocity. Dynamics consists of two parts: kinematics, the study of the motion of bodies without considering the manner the motion is produced, and kinetics, the study of bodies with unbalanced forces. 4 Applications The results obtained in mechanics apply directly to many fields of engineering, e.g. 5 Fundamental concepts of mechanics Length, time, mass, and force are fundamental quantities of mechanics Length, time, and mass are absolute quantities, which are independent of each other and can’t be ...
