What is the reformation? = making changes to improve something The english reformation = England broke away from the catholic church (Rome) happened between = 1534-1603 -> part of a bigger movement in europe called the protestant reformation Why did Henry VIII break from Rome? - Henry had one main problem! - he wanted a divorce from his wife (Catherine or orragon) - the pope said no -> why this mattered - he wanted a more heir - he didn't want to stay under the popes authority So Henry wanted to separate England from Rome to control the church himself How did Henry do this? 1) Act of restraint of appeals (1533) - people could no longer appeal to Rome - all decisions were made in England - The first step to breaking away 2) Act of supermarcy (1534) - Henry became the head of the Church of England - the pope lost all the power in England -> officially completed the break with Rome 3) Reason Act (1534) - if people disagreed with Henry, it was treason - punishment = death. -> forced people to accept the changes. 4) Dissolution of the monathies (1536-1539) - Henry closed monathies. - took their - land - money - wealth -> Henry became richer and more powerful Parliament -&...
