Chapter 2: Being a Responsible Leader and Follower - Critically Examining Ourselves •Introduction "Becoming a leader is synonymous with becoming yourself. It is precisely that simple, and it is also that difficult." - Warren Bennis Leading and following require both personal and professional growth. We have all encountered bosses, coaches, or teachers who have not done their own work, which can manifest in various ways. I have heard many stories from students, clients, and colleagues about leaders who are unclear about their vision or goals, condescending, poor listeners, or who foster dysfunctional and toxic work cultures. Others are well-meaning but struggle with boundaries, oversharing, or need constant reassurance. These examples span a spectrum, but all highlight a common issue: the lack of personal and professional development. •Early Development and Leadership I believe that early development, when we are primarily followers, contributes to better leaders later.
