Rising convection currents spread beneath plates and drag them apart, giving rise to divergent plate movement. 4. Mantle material loses heat and sinks towards the Earth’s core. 5. Sinking convection currents cause convergent plate movement, where the convection currents collide. 6. Mantle material is then reheated and the process repeats.
