They worked hard for the nobles to ensure they had a roof over their heads and food to eat. • Clothing Clothing was very simple and poor. Women wore long dresses and woolen stockings, while men wore túnicas and long stockings. Women made their own clothes, which were usually brown, red, or gray. • Homes Peasants lived in towns on the lord’s manor. Their houses were built of stone or branches covered with mud and straw, with thatched roofs. Homes typically had two rooms and were lit with candles. • Food They relied on the land for food. Their diet mainly consisted of bread, porridge, vegetables, and some meat. They cultivated gardens where they harvested vegetables, fruits, and other produce. • Childhood Children were named after relatives or saints. Everyone was needed to work in the fields. Many accidents occurred because children as young as two were left alone.
