What process causes the steep sides in a V-shaped valley?
Notes
V shaped valley How is it created (through erosion and/or deposition) In the upper course the fast river causes erosion through abrasion and hydraulic action these processes wear down the river bed and sides, making the sides steeper , The steep sides lead to weathering movement and the moved rock erodes the river. Interlocking spurs If there are areas of hard rock which are harder to erode, the river will bend around. This creates interlocking spurs of land which link together like the teeth of a zip. Waterfall and gorge The soft rock is eroded more quicker than the hard rock and this creates a step. As erosion continues, the hard rock is undercut forming an overhang. Abrasion and hydraulic action erode to create a plunge pool. Over time this gets bigger, increasing the size of the overhang until the hard rock is no longer supported and it collapses. This process continues and the waterfall retreats upstream. A steep-sided valley is left where the waterfall once was. This is called a gorge Meander The river both deposits and erodes laterally. The force of the water undercuts the bank on the outside of a bend to form a steep bank to the channel, called a river cliff or...
