Autonomic Nervous System (Pharmacology, Receptors, and Physiology)
Notes
•Introduction In this video, I will discuss the autonomic nervous system, with a focus on autonomic nervous system pharmacology. While the main emphasis is on the drugs relevant to this system, I will also review receptor types and general physiology to help you build the background needed to master the pharmacology. •Overview of the Autonomic Nervous System Let's start with an overview before diving into details. The autonomic nervous system has two main components: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. These are often called fight-or-flight and rest-and-digest, respectively. The sympathetic system activates during stress, preparing the body to fight or flee—think of symptoms when facing a bear. Conversely, the parasympathetic system activates during rest, such as after a large meal, facilitating digestion and relaxation. •Receptor Types and Opposing Functions The sympathetic nervous system primarily works through alpha and beta receptors, while the parasympathetic system uses muscarinic and nicotinic receptors. Simplifying these systems to just two receptor types helps form a conceptual framework, though it's not exhaustive. Importantly, these two syste...
