# Hist 281 final - 1492 - key date - fall of Granada - Jewish expulsion - end of Reconquista - Reconquista: a long process in which Christian kingdoms in the Iberian Peninsula slowly reconquered territory from Muslim rulers - starting in 718 & ending in 1492 with the fall of Granada in Spain. This took place for many centuries as Christian rulers expanded their political & religious control. By the late 1400's leaders like Ferdinand & Isabella pushed to fully unity Spain under Catholicism. The reconquista is significant because it led to the creation of a religiously unified Spanish state & set the stage for policies like the expulsion of Jews & the persecution of Muslims. - fall of Granada Occurred in 1492 when the last Muslim kingdom in Spain was conquered by Ferdinand & Isabella. This marked the end of Muslim political rule in the Iberian Peninsula after centuries of Islamic presence. After this conquest, Muslims were pressured to convert or leave.
