The Roman Empire was once the largest and most powerful empire in the world. It brought many different people together under one rule and created a long period of peace known as the Pax Romana. However, this peace did not benefit everyone equally. Wealthy landowners enjoyed power and privileges, while common people were heavily taxed and had little say in government. Over time, this caused dissatisfaction among the people. As the Roman Empire grew weaker, several non-Roman groups played an important role in its decline. These groups are often called “barbarians” by the Romans, though each had its own culture and history. Their invasions and settlements changed the political map of Europe and North Africa. The Goths were one such group. They attacked Roman territories and were responsible for storming the city of Rome. Later, the Visigoths established a powerful kingdom in northern Spain. Another fierce group was the Huns, who were skilled horse riders and feared warriors. They were led by Attila and invaded many Roman regions, causing great destruction.
