Original Jurisdiction: Jurisdiction in the first instance; commonly used to refer to trial jurisdiction (as compared with appellate jurisdiction). Appellate courts, however, have limited original jurisdiction. Ceritoriati: An order from a higher court exercising its right to review a lower court decision. Advisory Opinion: Judicial ruling in the absence of an actual case or controversy; a ruling in a hypothetical case without bona fide litigants. Ripe: Case that is ready for court action because the controversy has jelled sufficiently. Courts will not decide an issue before the need to do so. Interest Groups: groups of people who share common goals and aim to influence public policy w/o running for govt. Federal Question: Case that contains a major issue involving the US Constitution or US laws or treaties. Special Master: Person appointed by a court to hear evidence and submit findings and recommendations based on that evidence. The Supreme Court typically uses special masters in original jurisdiction cases.
