Big Concepts You MUST Know • Attribution Theory How we explain someone’s behavior: • Situational attribution = because of the situation • Dispositional attribution = because of their personality • Fundamental Attribution Error = we blame personality too much, and ignore the situation • EX: Someone cuts you off → you think “he’s rude” instead of “maybe he’s in a hurry.” ⸻ 2. Social Influence • Conformity (Asch) Adjusting your behavior to match a group. • Normative Social Influence You conform to fit in or be liked. • Informational Social Influence You conform because you’re unsure and think the group knows more. • Obedience (Milgram) People obey authority even when it means harming others. Highest obedience = teacher is close to the experimenter and far from the learner. ⸻ 3. Group Behavior • Social Loafing People put in less effort in a group. • Social Facilitation You perform better on easy tasks when people are watching. • Deindividuation Losing self-awareness in a group → acting wildly in a crowd or riot. • Groupthink Desire for harmony → bad decisions (no one speaks up). ⸻ 4.
