Peptic ulcer disease • An erosion is a defect in the mucosa which does not penetrate the muscularis mucosa Epidemiology of peptic ulcer disease • Prevalence in western world 0.1 to 0.25% • Prevalence in Nigeria is 5 -10% • Prevalence less in western countries due to less due to reduced prevalence of Helicobacter pylori • The male-to-female ratio for duodenal ulcer varies from 5 : 1 to 2 : 1, whilst that for gastric ulcer is 2 : 1 or less Peptic ulcer disease • Chronic gastric ulcer is usually single; 90% are situated on the lesser curvature within the antrum or at the junction between corpus and antral mucosa • Chronic duodenal ulcer usually occurs in the first part of the duodenum with 50% on the anterior wall • Gastric and duodenal ulcers coexist in 10% of patients • More than one peptic ulcer is...
