My name is Matías Taucare, and with Vivian Diaz and Constanza Madrid will be presenting our project titled The Catcher in the Shadows, which explores Holden Caulfield as a reflection of J.D. Salinger’s inner turmoil. DIAPO 2 INDEX DIAPO 3: The core of our research is based on a fundamental observation: J.D. Salinger was not an ordinary writer. Unlike his peers who embraced literary fame, Salinger chose a life of withdrawal and silence. As biographer Paul Alexander notes, “Salinger’s characters and stories are much more closely connected to his experiences than is usually the case with other writers”. We argue that Holden Caulfield is not merely a fictional creation but a literary extension of Salinger himself. Which leads us to our thesis statement: We propose that Holden Caulfield embodies Salinger’s biographical experiences of debarment, alienation, rejection, despair, and emotional turmoil.
