THE U.K. ● What is the UK? It’s a political name and union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Gran Britain is a geographical and political name that comprises England, Wales and Scotland. Ireland: Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. British isles: is a geographical name, archipelago of the NorthWest coast of Europe. ● What is a Constitutional Monarchy? A Constitutional Monarchy is a form of government in which a king or queen acts as Head of State. As a system of government, a Constitutional Monarchy separates the Head of State’s ceremonial and official duties from party politics. A Constitutional Monarchy also provides stability, continuity and a national focus, as the Head of State remains the same even as governments change. As a constitutional monarch, the Sovereign must remain politically neutral. On almost all matters the Sovereign acts on the advice of ministers. ● The Monarch The King reigns, but he does not rule. Ruling is done by his government, and as head of state in the UK the King is constitutionally obliged to follow the government’s advice.
