• The Plot Against Jesus The chief priests and scribes planned to kill Jesus after Passover. Many people were in Jerusalem for the festival, and they went there expecting the arrival of the Messiah. The leaders thought that if they killed Jesus during that time, the people might have rioted because some believed Jesus may have been the Messiah. • The Anointing of Jesus Jesus' encounter in Bethany at the house of Simon seemed to set the final stage for his enemies to move against Him. Simon was a Pharisee who was healed from leprosy. While at the dinner party, Jesus was approached by a woman carrying an alabaster container of expensive perfume. She broke the container and lavishly poured all of the perfume on Jesus' head. Some people complained that such an act was a waste of such an expensive item. It could have been sold, and the proceeds given to the poor. Jesus defended the woman's action, saying she was anointing Him in advance of His burial. Her reward would be to be remembered in the Gospel. These events appeared to have prompted Judas to betray Jesus. Judas was the treasurer (John 13:29).
