Protestant Revolution and its social impact The Protestant Revolution transformed early modern Britain not only at a religious level but also in terms of social structure, family organization and the concept of individual responsibility. Protestantism weakened the authority of the Catholic Church and rejected the idea that people depended entirely on priests and the Church for salvation. Instead, it promoted the idea of a direct and personal relationship with God. This shift reduced the institutional power of the Church. An important element in this transformation was the emphasis on Bible reading and personal interpretation. The publication of the Authorized Version of the Bible in 1611 under James I made the Scriptures more accessible to English readers. As a result, literacy became not only an intellectual skill but also a spiritual duty, since believers were expected to read and understand the Bible themselves.
