• What is an invertebrate animal? Invertebrates are animals without backbones. Most invertebrates are small, so we often don't notice them, but as you can see in Fig 1.4 A, there are a lot of them. Invertebrate animals are divided into smaller groups to help us identify them. Here are some of the main groups of invertebrates: •Arthropods Arthropods all have a hard outer skeleton and jointed legs. They are divided into four smaller groups: - Insects: They have three segments to their bodies – a head, thorax, and abdomen. They all have six legs and a pair of antennae on their heads. Many insects also have wings. - Archnids: They have two segments to their bodies. They possess eight legs, and many of them spin webs. This group includes spiders, scorpions, and ticks. - Crustaceans:They have at least ten legs. Examples of crustaceans are crabs, prawns, and shrimps. - Myriapods: They have long, segmented bodies. They have one or two pairs of legs on each segment. P: 26-27 Kerboodle Cambridge Lower Secondary Unit: 1.4
