# TITLE: THE EVOLUTION OF DEMOCRACY IN ECUADOR Ecuador became a country in 1830 after gaining independence and separating from Gran Colombia. At that time, political power was controlled by a small elite group called the criollos. They were landowners with economic and political power. Most people—such as indigenous groups, Afro-Ecuadorians, workers, and small farmers—were excluded. They were not considered citizens and had no political or civil rights. Democracy was limited and unfair. In the late 19th century, the system began to change. A new social class, the commercial and banking bourgeoisie, gained economic power and demanded political participation. At the same time, new ideas like liberalism promoted equality and democracy. In 1895, the Liberal Revolution transformed Ecuador. The country became more modern, democratic, and secular (separating Church and State). More people were recognized as citizens, including women and marginalized groups. They gained rights such as voting, education, and work.
