1.4. Animal and plant cells Animal and plant cells will have common structures and specific structures. Common structures Cell membrane: a layer that insulates and limits the cell, composed mainly of lipids. It is used for the exchange of substances and to communicate with other cells. Cytoplasm: internal fluid consisting mainly of water and mineral salts. It contains the rest of the cell structures. Cytoskeleton: a bundle of protein fibres of different diameters that form a 'scaffolding structure' that holds all the structures in place and gives the cell its shape. Cytoskeleton (Filaments) Cytoskeleton (Filaments) Nucleus: a structure formed by a double membrane in continuity with the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) that contains the cell's genetic material (DNA). Núcleo Núcleo Vesicles: small temporary membranous structures containing different substances. Secretory vesicles Secretory vesicles Ribosomes: particles made up of RNA and proteins that are responsible for protein formation. They can be found free in the cytoplasm and also associated with the RER membrane. Ribosome Ribosome Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER): a set of membranous flattened sacs, interconnected with eac...
