• The Body’s Building Blocks Before understanding how individual body systems work, it is important to understand what makes up the human body. Our bodies consist of trillions of cells—the basic units of all living things. You can think of these tiny parts as building blocks. When the blocks, or cells, join together, they form body tissue. There are different types of tissue in the human body. When they join together, they form our organs. • The Circulatory System The circulatory system consists of the heart, arteries, capillaries, and veins. They work together to transport blood from the heart and lungs to different parts of the body. The heart acts as a pump, allowing the blood to move through the blood vessels, which are like roads inside the body. There are three kinds of blood vessels—arteries, capillaries, and veins.
