Subject: Morphology & Phonetics GROUPS A-B ( First midterm ) Lesson 1 Remark : The English we teach and practice in this subject is the speech of the average modern General American ( GA ) speakers, i. e., the common denominator of the speech of educated Americans, commonly used in formal contexts, by people with higher education, and in broadcast media. (Network English). The core area for General American is the Midwest, with states like Iowa, Illinois, Ohio , and Michigan being prominent. Main GOAL: to speak GA English with clarity and accuracy . English orthography (i.e., spelling) is notoriously unreliable.
