Apuntes
What is respiration? It is the process by which the body's cells obtain oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide. It is essential for producing energy in the cells through a process called cellular metabolism. Types of respiration: External respiration: Gas exchange between the lungs and the blood. Internal respiration: Gas exchange between the blood and the body's cells. Main organs: Respiratory system: Includes the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. Alveoli: Small sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs. Process of gas exchange: When we inhale, oxygen enters the lungs and passes into the alveoli. The oxygen diffuses into the blood, binding to hemoglobin in red blood cells. Oxygen-rich blood circulates throughout the body, delivering oxygen to the cells. The cells use oxygen to produce energy and generate carbon dioxide as a waste product. The carbon dioxide travels in the blood back to the lungs and is exhaled. Importance of gas exchange: It allows cells to perform their vital functions by producing energy and eliminating gaseous waste.
