Global warming
What do greenhouse gases (GHGs) do in the Earth's atmosphere?
Apuntes
**Global Warming** The Earth naturally retains heat in a similar way to a greenhouse: • Some gases in the atmosphere, called greenhouse gases (GHGs), allow heat from the Sun to reach the surface of the planet. • Greenhouse gases prevent some of the heat from escaping back into space. This prevents the planet from becoming too cold. However, this natural greenhouse effect is increasing as a result of the rise in some human activities. For example: • The extraction of raw materials and industrial production processes generate numerous gases and toxic waste. • Transportation that uses fossil fuels emits many polluting gases. As a result, global warming is occurring. This means an increase in the average temperature of the Earth's surface. In just over a century, the Earth's temperature has risen by 1.1°C. In the last decade, the temperature has risen by 0.2°C. **Global warming is one of the causes of climate change:** a change in the Earth’s climates, which is caused directly or indirectly by human activities. | KEY QUESTIONS |
