What is Wilms' Tumor?
Apuntes
•Wilms’ Tumor Most common renal malignancy in young children, Wilms’ tumor results from proliferation of metanephric blastema, which contains embryonic glomerular structures. It is associated with WT1 mutations, with WT1 expressed in metanephric blastema and mesenchyme. •Kidney Formation Key structures include the ureteric bud, an outgrowth of the mesonephric (Wolffian) duct that develops into the ureter, renal pelvis, calyxes, and collecting ducts, and the metanephric mesenchyme (blastema), a mesoderm tissue that interacts with the ureteric bud to form glomeruli and tubules. Aberrant interactions can cause kidney malformations. •Kidney Development The pronephros forms and degenerates by week 4, followed by the mesonephros, which acts as an interim kidney in the first trimester and contributes to the vas deferens in males. The metanephros, the permanent kidney, appears in week 5 and develops through weeks 32-36. All kidneys derive from mesoderm, with three embryonic structures forming in utero; the first two degenerate, leaving the adult kidney. •Potter’s Sequence and Syndrome Potter’s sequence involves fetal exposure to absent or decreased amniotic fluid, mainly d...
