Energy
What is energy?
Apuntes
â˘Energy Energy is the ability to do work. It exists in many forms, including heat, light, motion, and electrical energy. â˘Resources Non-renewable resources can only be used once; they are consumed when used (e.g., coal) or can be exhausted (e.g., trees, fish). Renewable resources can be used repeatedly, recycled (metals), or are always available (wind). â˘Non-Renewable Energy Resources Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, formed millions of years ago from organic material buried under sediments. Pressure and heat transformed these into fuels. How do we obtain energy from fossil fuels? We burn them to release chemical energy stored in their carbon and hydrogen bonds. This energy is then converted into various forms: - Thermal energy: heating buildings, cooking, producing steam in power plants - Mechanical energy: cars, planes, ships, turbines - Electrical energy: powering homes, industries - Chemical energy: transportation, manufacturing Advantages and disadvantages include: - High energy output and existing infrastructure make them efficient and reliable. - They are cheap short-term but are non-renewable, contributing to environmental dam...
