MEDIEVAL CATHOLIC HEGEMONY Church related people, as priests, nuns and the Pope became very important too. The Pope was even above kings in authority and influence. As you know, the Catholic Church was a very important institution during the Middle Ages, gathering all the continent under one faith. We call it an hegemony because the power of the church was almost total: everywhere and over every other institution (crown, military, and more). Martin Luther Protestant reform and the Luther ’ s schism had social, economic and political consequences. Other churchs, like the protestant, calvinist and anglican were created and spreaded through Europe. Countries developed a more independent identity, based on their nationalities instead of religion. The lack of money led to a crisis that diminished the power of the Church in the continent.
