• Subtopic: Difference Between Peritoneal Dialysis and Hemodialysis Both methods perform the function of the kidneys by filtering waste and excess fluid from the blood, but they use different "filters" and locations. 1. Hemodialysis (HD) - In hemodialysis, your blood is pumped out of your body, filtered through an artificial kidney machine (dialyzer), and then returned to you. - The Filter: A man-made membrane inside a machine. - Access: Usually through a "fistula" (a joined vein and artery) in your arm. - Setting: Typically done in a clinic or hospital 3 times a week for about 4 hours each time. - Vibe: It's efficient but can be exhausting ("washed out" feeling) and requires a strict schedule. 2. Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) - In peritoneal dialysis, the lining of your own abdomen (the peritoneum) acts as the filter. A cleaning fluid (dialysate) is washed in and out of your abdomen through a permanent tube. - The Filter: Your natural abdominal lining (peritoneum). - Access: A soft catheter permanently placed in your abdomen. - Setting: Done at home, often daily.
