What is friction?
Apuntes
• What is Friction? Opposing Forces Friction is the resistance to the motion of an object that is in contact with another. It can hold a stationary object in place, slow down the movement of a moving object, or stop its movement completely. For example, applying the brakes on a bicycle increases the friction between the brake and the wheel, causing the wheel to stop rotating. The amount of friction produced depends on the surfaces of the objects. Smooth surfaces usually produce less friction than rough surfaces because there are fewer irregularities—or physical obstacles. There are two main types of friction. • Static Friction: This is the friction between a stationary object and the surface on which it is resting. Static friction is the strongest kind of friction, acting like glue as it holds the object in place. A lot of force is needed to put the object into motion. When the object starts moving, static friction turns into the second type of friction. • Kinetic Friction: This is produced when at least one of the objects is in motion. There are different types as well. Rolling friction acts on an object turning over and over on a surface, like the wheels on a moving bicycle...
