Developed in the 1970s, it emerged as an alternative to behaviorist approaches in language teaching. The model consists of five key hypotheses: 1. Acquisition vs. Learning Hypothesis – Language is acquired naturally through exposure rather than learned through conscious effort. 2. Monitor Hypothesis – Language users rely on acquired knowledge for communication but use learned rules for self-correction when time and focus allow. 3. Natural Order Hypothesis – Language acquisition follows predictable sequences, and simpler rules aren’t necessarily learned first. 4. Comprehensible Input Hypothesis – Learners acquire language when exposed to input that is understandable but slightly beyond their current level ( i + 1 ). 5. Affective Filter Hypothesis – Emotional factors like anxiety can block language acquisition even when exposure is adequate. Principles of language learning and teaching (H.
