•SUMMARY UNIT 7 Conflicts of political origin Political conflicts generally fall into four categories: – Territorial conflicts between neighboring countries. These arise from disagreements over land or maritime borders, claims to annexed border regions, or the desire to control strategic territories. – Nationalist conflicts. These occur when a group seeks separation or independence from an established country. Often, these conflicts also involve ethnic or religious factors. – Political-ideological and ethnic conflicts. These stem from efforts to maintain or change political regimes, or to defend or impose beliefs, religious extremism, or ethnicity. – Conflicts to maintain hegemony or prestige. These involve interventions in other countries to ensure the security or dominance of a powerful nation. Conflicts of economic origin These conflicts mainly revolve around control of economic resources. Most are related to territorial control over natural resources such as land, water, oil, gas, or minerals.
