FONOLOGÍA DE LA LENGUA INGLESA PRIMER CUATRIMESTRE 2025 CÁTEDRA DAVID - ZABALA COMISIÓN 3096 RESUMENES PRIMER PARCIAL CLASSIFICATION OF CONSONANTS IN DETAIL 1 - What organs are used to set the airstream in motion? - In normal speech, all English sounds are PULMONIC : it is the diaphragm (muscle below lungs) that compresses the lungs so that the air contained in them is pushed out. 2 - What direction does the airstream take? - In English, the sounds are EGRESSIVE (i.e. th e air stream is pushed outwards). 3 - How do the vocal folds work? a - The vocal folds may come together hundreds of times per second because of the airstream that passes through them, producing vibration. This process is called PHONATION or VOICING . b - The glot tis (space/orifice between the vocal folds) may be held wide open, so the vocal folds are not in contact. This allows for the air to pass freely without vibration. This is the position the vocal folds take to produce VOICELESS sounds. c - The vocal folds may be held firmly together so that the air coming from the lungs is held below them.
