TE Strateg
What is the main purpose of implanted scaffolds with cells and growth factors in traditional tissue engineering?

TE Strategies 1. Implanted scaffolds with cells and growth factors (Traditional TE) Create a scaffold seeded with cells (SCs or patient-derived) and infused with growth factors to be implanted into the body to induce tissue regeneration. 2. In situ tissue regeneration using bioactive biomaterials Instead of implanting a pre-formed structure with cells, here we use bioactive biomaterials to interact with the body’s own cells to stimulate self-regeneration: • There’s no need to add cells or growth factors, and the materials can be injectable (e.g. hydrogels). Key Elements 1. Cells They are the building blocks of a new tissue. Types: • Stem cells → MSCs → High proliferation and capacity to produce bone, cartilage, and adipose tissue → Sources: bone marrow and adipose tissue 2. Scaffolds Provide a 3D structure for cells to: • Adhere • Proliferate • Migrate • Organize into functional tissue Properties: • Biocompatible and biodegradable • High porosity and surface area • Mimics the ECM mechanically and chemically • They use both natural (collagen, gelatin) and synthetic (PLGA, PCL) materials 3. Biomaterials The substance scaffolds are made from. They are engineered t...
