Chapter 13: Motivation and Emotion Section 1 Motivation: the motive that drives you to get the ful fi lment of a need ● Motive: stimulus needed to behave in a way to accomplish a goal (reason behind it) ● Need : a condition in which we require something we lack ○ Biological: needed to survive, Ex. food, sleep, water ○ Psychological: (learned) Ex. money, school ● Drive : the force that motivates an organism to take action Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs 1. Physiological a. Biological requirements for human survival : Food, water, warmth 2. Safety need: desire for security , protection, and a safe environment ● Physical safety, fi nancial security and a sense of order and control. 3. Love and Belonging: The need to feel loved and accepted, and to have close relationships with others Family • Friendship 4. Esteem: The desire for respect, self-worth and self-con fi dence Also includes getting esteem from others, recognition from others 5.
