3.0 Free Body Diagram The free body diagram is a pictorial representation(not necessarily to scale) of a body in question, by itself, entirely isolated from the other bodies, and all external forces exerted on that body as a result of the interaction between the free body and the other bodies Example The Figure shows a weight suspended by a rope. Figure (b) and (c) represent the free body diagrams of the rope and the weight respectively (a) Hung weight (b) Rope free-body diagram (c) Weight free-body diagram 10 lb F 10 lb (gravitational force) F Procedure for drawing FBD: 1. Draw the subject body isolated from all other bodies. This body may be an entire structure or it may be an individual part of the structure. 2. Show all the known forces on the body indicating the magnitude and direction. 3. Indicate all possible unknown forces such as support reactions, with a symbol and include as much known information as possible.
