Reading & Listening skills By LEII Daniel Martínez Reading skills The most common are: Skimming Read a text / section quickly to gain the basic idea Guess from context paraphrasing To understand new words using the context around them in text. Rewrite the text in your own words in a brief way. Scanning Looking over a text for key terms, data, dates or information Predicting Previewing Look at the headings, tables, figures, and glossary to get an idea of the text's structure. Make predictions about the text based on the title and any other clues. Look for detailed information that you think can be important later. Underlining key sentences or taking notes can be helpful too. Reading the first two sentences and last sentence of each paragraph, Reading 2-3 words of each line down the middle of a paragraph, Reading the introduction and conclusion, Reading the abstract Skimming scanning Before a reading, we can brainstorm the information we know about the topic of the text.
