Particle Model **NOTES** **Facts and what I don't understand** **Structure of solids, liquids, and gases** **Solid:** Arrangement: Particles are closely packed in a regular fixed structure. Separation: Very little space between particles. Motion: Particles vibrate in place but do not move freely. **Liquid:** Arrangement: Particles are close together, but in a random arrangement. Separation: Slightly more space than in solids. Motion: Particles can move around each other, sliding past, allowing flow. **Gas:** Arrangement: Particles are far apart and randomly arranged. Separation: Large spaces between particles. Motion: Particles move rapidly and randomly in all directions. --- **Relationship between particle motion and temperature** - Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance. - As temperature increases, the particles move faster. - As temperature decreases, particles move slower. **What it means for each state:** | State | Effect of Increasing Temperature | |---------|----------------------------------------| | Solid | Particles vibrate more vigorously in place. | | Liquid | Particl...
