Interpretation is the transfer of a spoken or signed message into another spoken or signed language , while preserving the meaning, tone, and register of the original language. Its purpose is to enable communication between people who speak different languages . Key fact: Interpreters work in many settings, such as conferences, business meetings, courts, hospitals, courses, and more . Interpretation vs Translation: • Interpretation : real - time, spoken or signed , immediate, requires quick thinking. • Translation : written , done over a longer period from source text. They share some skills but are two different disciplines . Essential Skills of an Interpreter: A good interpreter must have: • Impartiality , cultural sensitivity, and adaptability. • Excellent memory , focus, physical and mental stamina. • Ability to make quick, intuitive decisions . • Confidence in public speaking. • Awareness of current events , politics, and cultures. • Expertise in a specific subject area. • Self - discipline , motivation, and accuracy under pressure.
