What is matter?
Apuntes
• Matter: Definition and States Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. It is made up of small parts called atoms. Matter can be presented in different states, each with specific characteristics. **States of Matter:** - Solid - Liquid - Gas The matter has two main properties: **Mass:** The mass is the quantity of matter in an object, measured in kilograms. **Volume:** The volume is the space that an object occupies, measured in liters. Matter has both mass and volume. **Mass:** Measurement of the amount of matter (how heavy an object is). **Volume:** Measurement of the amount of space an object takes up. **Density of Matter:** How tightly packed matter is—the amount of mass in a given space. **States of Matter by Density:** - Gas - Liquid - Solid --- • Physical Properties of Matter **Physical Properties:** These are properties used to describe matter without changing its identity. **Examples include:** 1) Heavy or Light 2) Hard or Soft 3) Colored or Colorless 4) Transparent or Opaque 5) Rough or Smooth 6) Good or Bad conductor of electricity and heat --- • Physical and Chemical Changes **Physical Change:** A change i...
