Why is quantification important in cryoanaesthesia studies?
Apuntes
This quantification is essential to avoid excessive energy loss, which could compromise fish homeostasis and trigger physiological responses associated with stress (Barbas and Hamoy, 2021). Thus, these tools are essential for assessing the effectiveness of the cryoanaesthesia method, monitoring the physiological changes resulting from exposure to different temperatures and ultimately determining the most suitable thermal conditions for enhanced fish welfare and safety. Within this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the electroencephalographic and electromyographic recordings of juvenile C. macropomum during exposure to decreasing temperatures of 10°C, 5°C and 0°C, and thereby determining the most appropriate temperatures for short-term cryoanaesthesia. 2. Materials and Methods 2.1. Experimental animals This study used a total of 36 12-week old juvenile C. macropomum, with an average weight of 32 ± 4.1g. The fish were obtained from a commercial farm and transported to the Experimental Bioterium of the Laboratory of Pharmacology and Toxicology of Natural Products, in a temperature-regulated environment (25-27ºC), with Journal Pre-proof Journal Pre-proof 5 a 12-hour light-da...
