General Introduction to Anatomy Before beginning with specific definitions, it is important to understand what anatomy is and why it is fundamental in the health sciences. Anatomy is one of the basic disciplines of biology and medicine, as it allows us to understand how the human body is organized, what its parts are, how they relate to one another, and where they are located exactly. Without anatomy, we would not be able to understand physiology, pathology, clinical medicine, or medical practice. In order to understand how something works, we must first know how it is structured. The word anatomy comes from the Greek anatomé, meaning dissection. This term refers to the historical practice of cutting, separating, and observing the different parts of the body in order to study them. Since ancient times, dissection has been a key tool for anatomical knowledge, although for many centuries it was prohibited or limited for religious or cultural reasons.
