In the 5th century, following the fall of the Roman Empire and the invasion of the barbarians (the Germanic peoples), the Suebi established their monarchy in the former Roman province of Gallaecia. The Suebi Gallaecia was the first kingdom born in Western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire and maintained its independence for more than a century and a half (411-585). The Suebi kingdom was eventually annexed by the Visigoths and came under the control of the Hispano-Gothic monarchy, but the Galician territory continued to retain much autonomy. This relative independence of Gallaecia during the three centuries of the Germanic period (5th, 6th, and 7th centuries), favored by the isolation derived from its peripheral geographical location, was of special importance for the formation of a Galician linguistic identity, as it encouraged particular trends in the speech of this area.
