In this oral presentation, I will talk about the novel The Giver. It was written by Lois Lowry and published in 1993. This novel tells the story of a highly controlled and organized community where people live without emotions, memories, or personal freedom. Everything in their lives is decided by the authorities to keep the society stable and peaceful. This extract belongs to Chapter 7, during the Ceremony of Twelve. In this important ceremony, each child turning twelve receives an Assignment, which will determine their future job and role in the community. The extract begins when the Chief Elder calls the first numbers to the stage, and Jonas watches the process with attention and curiosity. We see Madeline being assigned as a Fish Hatchery Attendant, Inger becoming a Birthmother, and Isaac as an Instructor of Sixes. Jonas feels relieved that those jobs are taken, but also starts to feel nervous about what his own Assignment will be. The main characters in this extract are Jonas, Madeline, Inger, and the Chief Elder, who represents authority and control in the community.
