# ROCKS Rocks are sterile natural substances made up of one or more minerals. They can be identified by two different properties: ## Composition • **Homogeneous/Simple**: These rocks are composed of only one mineral. • **Heterogeneous/Complex**: These rocks are made of more than one mineral. For example, granite is complex because it is made up of three minerals. ## Texture Texture refers to the size and arrangement of the minerals in the rock. Depending on their origins, geologists classify rocks into three groups: --- ## Igneous Rocks Formed when the magma from the Earth's interior goes outside and cools. ## Sedimentary Rocks Made of different substances, these rocks form when the sediment fuses. Sediments are fragments of other rocks or organic substances. Sedimentary rocks can be divided into two groups: • **Detrital Rocks**: Made of fragments of rocks. - Conglomerates - Sandstone (Arenisca) - Clay (Arcilla) • **Non-detrital Rocks**: Made of organic matter. - Limestone: Fossil remains, huge fossils (Caliza) - Gypsum: Mineral salts, lots of things mixed (Yeso) - Coal: Plant remains (Carbón) - Petroleum: Formed by organic remains (liquid) In limestone, we can find fossils, filled...
