Hitler and the Nazis In 1919 Hitler worked as a spy for the German army after WWI. He spied on Anton Drexler’s German workers’ party (right-wing) and decided to join. In 1920 Drexler put Hitler as propaganda leader. Hitler also renamed party to: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei. National → for the whole Germany Socialist → every German should be part of this society German → for the Aryan race Workers → everyone is a worker and should work for Germany Party In 1921 Hitler removed Drextler as the party’s leader. He set up the SA, which was a paramilitary group known as “Brown shirts”. They were thugs who protected Hitler while he delivered speeches. It attacked Hitler’s opponents and they were led by Ernst Röhm. Munich Putsch (1923) During the invasion of the Ruhr Hitler decided he would try to topple the Weimar government. In November 1923 Hitler started a coup d’etat at a brewery in Munich by hijacking a local government meeting and announcing he was taking over the government of Bavaria. Ludendorff joined him.
