Basic tools of the workshop Measuring tools To express the dimension of a piece as a number. • Metal ruler: it measures in milimetres and sometimes in other units too. • Measuring tape: it measures up to one, two or three metres. Metal set square or carpenter’s square: for measuring and checking right angles and drawing perpendicular lines. Caliper: Measures small lengths (a few milimetres). Marking tools To make a sign on the piece we are working •Centre punch: for marking metal or smooth surfaces before drilling to prevent the drill bit from slipping. •Steel-tipped compass, for drawing circles or arcs on metal. Clamping tools To give phsically support to avoid movement of a piece while we are working on it • Bar clamp: Clamps parts to the table or holds two parts together. • Pincers: for removing nails, holding and cutting. • Pliers: Holds down parts that need to be bent, cut or hammered. They are also used to bend wires. • Benc vice: Holds parts in position. It is fixed to the table. Hammering tools To give an impulsive force • Hammer.
